Finchley pet shop to close after 48 years

Finchley

A well-known pet shop in Finchley ceases trading after almost half-a-century in the business. Dunlops Pet Shop, on Long Lane, has survived numerous burglaries over the years and a fire in 1985 which killed many pets – but in the end it’s mainly the internet which finished off the business. Owner Stephen Dunlop, 63, began work in the shop as a 16-year-old, initially for just two weeks to help out his parents while they went on holiday. Little did he know it was to be a job for a lifetime. The shop was also the place in which he met…

Complaints about pet insurance rocket

Complaints about pet insurance have rocketed 38 per cent in a year because of huge price hikes and disputes about which therapies should be covered. The Financial Ombudsman says it received a total of 1,089 complaints in the 12 months to April – up from 790 in the previous year. It says the rise is largely down to soaring numbers of pet owners trying to claim for therapies such as hydrotherapy and acupuncture to ease pets’ symptoms when suffering from conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism. fireworks

The campaign calls for the ban of private fireworks and for the use of them to be restricted to just a few specific days a year – like Guy Fawkes Night and Diwali. It is being backed by animal charity the RSPCA, who get hundreds of calls about fireworks every year because so many animals are frightened by the loud noises. Pet owners who know about their animal’s fear of fireworks can treat them with medication, but only if they know in advance when fireworks will be let off. By restricting their use to certain days, many pets will be…
