The new clinic is part of Ashby Vet Group, Ashby Road, and comes as part of a £80,000 extension to the current premises.

Laurence Brown, director at the clinic, has said the idea has been 18 months in the making.

“We wanted a place where cats were separate from the dogs,” he said. “When the two are in the same reception area and the dogs are barking it can be quite stressful for cats.”

The clinic consists of two consultant rooms and its own reception.

Currently, the clinic employs a receptionist, a nurse and a vet.

Owners who are looking to book an appointment for their cat will also soon be transferred straight through to the clinic.

Laurence said that the whole idea of the clinic is to create a relaxing environment for the cats.

“We also have pheromones which help to keep the cats relaxed,” he said.

Michelle Greaves, who takes her kitten Jazz to the vets, said she was impressed with the new clinic, “Jazz was petrified when in the same room as the dogs,” she said. “This new clinic is great.”

The clinic is now seeking to gain cat friendly accreditation.

International Cat Care, a charity which seeks to promote welfare for felines, accredits the status to vets across the country. As well as the clinic, the vets is looking to add a further extension to help pet owners get from one side of the surgery to the cat clinic.

“The idea is to lead cat owners through here so they don’t have to go outside in the wind and rain,” said Laurence.
